HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

Christmas holiday gift present red bow Tiffany Co blue box

Wishing you and your family a very happy holiday! I hope this holiday season brings you much joy, love and hope.

I thank you so much for following along throughout the year and being a part of COCOCOZY.  Your support has been such a gift to me!

Tonight, on Christmas Eve, I will be with family at my sis DS's house.  Almost 20 of us are gathering for a dinner and a nice celebration.  I am running around all day because I am actually cooking dinner!  Oh my!

My Christmas Eve dinner menu:
-Orange rosemary herb roasted chicken
-Haitian rice (a tradition from my mother)
-Green beans with shallots and garlic
-Cranberries
-Colorful green salad with avocado, corn, red and yellow peppers with a shallot lemon vinaigrette
-Apple pie from Sweet Lady Janes (normally I make pies but so many people this time...I am getting the help from one of my favorite bakeries...their deep dish apple pie is like something out of a fairytale...heaping with apples with a wonderful flaky tall bumpy top crust)

I will serve a champagne cranberry cocktail to start the evening off along with a light selection of cheeses.

We'll see how this all actually goes.  Everyone arrives at 7p.  I must get going!

Happy Holidays everyone!  Happy happy holidays!

HOLIDAY TABLE SETTING

Holiday table setting with straw runner and Christofle flatware

Brainstorming ideas today for Christmas Eve. These are pictures of the table I set last year at my sis DS's house for holiday dinner. Lots of gold, a straw runner, nice Christofle flatware, a low red berry centerpiece in an unpainted flower box, and glitter ornaments as place cards and favors. I cooked for about 8 people last year. This year it could be double. Oh what to do. Need to figure something cute out.

Tip: I wanted to add a little green into the table setting so I actually layered the straw runner on top of a wider green runner to add layers.

Tip 2: Went to the flower mart here in Los Angeles and bought some green leaves, red berries, oasis and an unpainted flower box and fashioned that into a low dinner table centerpiece. I had bought tons of other flowers but realized they were too high for people to enjoy good conversation.

Need to figure out colors and scheme for this year...also must blend with sis DS's midcentury modern decor and vibe. Thinking!

This is last year's look...throwing party at the same place this year...what will this year look like?

Any ideas. If you do have ideas or want to show me your table setting plan, please tag me @COCOCOZY on Instagram! Can't wait to see.

Happy Thursday!

HAPPY THANKSGIVING

Al fresco fall dining table setting from Judy Pak Photography

Thanksgiving is almost here! Love the idea of dining al fresco for this autumn holiday. Love this harvest dinner party setting from Judy Pak Photography that I spied on Style Me Pretty. A great look for a city roof top Thanksgiving dinner party.

Spending the holiday with family. Very low key. I am looking forward to a day of rest and a day of being thankful!

Am so thankful this holiday to have a sweet guy like TE in my life. I'll post pictures of the flowers on Instagram @cococozy. Follow me there so you can see. Thank you TE!

I have to make a pie tonight and then I'll head over to my mother's house tomorrow morning. Hope your holiday prep is going well!

Happy Wednesday! Happy Thanksgiving!

GOOD BYE 2012, HELLO 2013 (AND MY ONE RESOLUTION)!

Photo in this post by Coco of COCOCOZY
Palm trees and blue skies while driving in Los Angeles, CA

Let's see...it is December 31st. The end of 2012. Am in Colorado...for a snowy long holiday in Beaver Creek with TE. Everyone is out skiing.  I'm in the hotel room. Writing this post.  We're going to dinner tonight with best of friend FF and her husband CCF...and we'll have dessert with my godson CGF...I can't wait.

I took the picture above while driving through Los Angeles early one morning last week. It was a cold morning; it had rained overnight and the gorgeous clear skies and sunrise stopped me in my tracks. I took a moment. A pause. A moment to reflect. The sunrise symbolized hope and opportunity to me. Another chance to start over. It made me think of the New Year.

Every year when I write this end of the year post, I get a little teary. I think about all of the things that have happened in the past year and I wonder about what is to come in the year ahead. This year is no different.

The last few weeks of 2012 have been a bit challenging. A bit of a test. A test that I passed but by no means with flying colors. I made it through but not too gracefully.  Like I'm sure many of us have, in 2012, I have been faced with some situations that took me be surprise.  I managed to problem solve my way out of each of the situations...that made me feel good.  The question is though, did I handle the stressful situations with elegance and grace?

For 2011, my goal was "To be brave". In 2012 my New Year's resolution was "To inspire".  Let's see...now there is 2013.

In 2013, I think my resolution will be to "Handle it with Grace".  In trying times, in good times, in emotional times, in happy times...I want to try my best to handle it all with grace.  What I mean by that is to make sure I always strive to stay composed, kind, considerate and as reasonable as possible.

This year is going to be a big year for me and COCOCOZY.  This year we launch several exciting partnerships and I am still doing the juggling act of my fantastic day job and COCOCOZY by night.  I hope and wish and pray and I'll strive to handle the good, the bad and the not so pretty with as much grace as possible....while always remembering to have a good dose of a sense of humor along the way.

The day before Christmas, I ran down to the flower mart to get flowers for a table centerpiece.  There was a lady outside the flower mart. She asked me for money on my way in. She clearly was in need.  I kept walking. I came out of the flower mart, headed to my car.  I immediately noticed I had a parking ticket on the windshield.  As I was about to reach for the parking ticket, I looked up and saw the lady crossing the street.  There I stood with all of my flowers, heading home to make a lovely dinner for family and friends and I thought...why did I walk past this woman earlier?  So I reached into my purse, where I only had a $10 bill and I gave it to her.  The lady said thank you and proceeded to tell me she was off drugs and she would use the money to buy food.  I hopped into my car and sped off.  I felt good. I hoped the lady felt good too. As I raced off,  the parking ticket on my windshield that I was reaching for earlier but didn't ever get, flew off and sailed through the air behind my car. It was gone.  I'm sure though the city will track me down for my parking transgression!  I smiled though and chuckled a bit.  I thought to myself that this situation is similar to so many situations every day.  A little good and a little something that makes life a bit more of a challenge.  Expect the challenges.  Handle them with grace.

I look forward to spending another year with you talking about life, design, decor and so much more.  I also look forward to taking on the challenges in life with lots of resolve and lots of grace.

Happy New Year to my dear mother, amazing sister (sis DS), aunts, uncles, cousins, friends (including best of friend AM) and all of the wonderful people in my life (TE etc)...including you dear readers!

Thank you all for sharing this past year with me...and I look forward to exploring another with you in 2013.

Happy New Year!

A SNOWY SWEDISH HOLIDAY!

Coastline in Gothenberg, Sweden in winter
TE's amazing photos of the Swedish coastline. (above)

It is Christmas Eve morning. A rainy cold Christmas Eve here in Los Angeles. A little weather finally! We are so accustomed to sun all of the time that a little rain feels like we are in a huge snow storm here!

I definitely equate snow with Christmas. I don't think I've ever had a white Christmas as I was born and raised here in Southern California.

TE sent me these gorgeous winter photos just a bit ago. TE is in Gothenberg, Sweden visiting his famiy for the week. A Christmas holiday in the EU!

I guess TE's been out on a walk there today in an area called Saro Vasterskoog...along the dramatic coastline. Snow, the ocean, ice and trees...something so peaceful and striking about these scenes.

I wonder what it would be like to spend a Christmas in a stunning snowy setting?

Frozen coastline in Sweeden with trees and tall grass

Coastline in sweden with snow and a life preserver flotation device

Tidal pool frozen solid off the coast of Sweden in winter

Swedish coastline in winter with dark trees, footprints in stone and still water
This is my favorite...love the dark trees and the footprints in the snow and the glassy water...something so mysterious and moody about this one. (above)

Thank you TE for sharing these beautiful photos.  Can't wait to see more of them when you get back!

Dear readers...are you spending your holiday in the snow?  Where will you be?  I'm running late.  Going to flower mart then have to rustle up Christmas Eve dinner for 8 people.

Happy Monday!  Happy Christmas Eve!

P.S. Went to a very nice holiday party at chic textiles showroom Harbinger last night.  Got a chance to catch up with owners Joe Lucas and Parrish Chilcoat and showroom manager Tami. Also was nice to talk with Brian Ferrick, super talented textiles designer and half of Ferrick Mason.  Before running out to a dinner, saw stylish interior designer Ron Woodson  of Woodson & Rummerfeld too.  Party was a book signing for uber designer and t.v. personality Thom Filicia. Then headed to a dinner at Comme Ca.  Fun night.

HOLIDAY MANTEL MAGIC - TWO VERY DIFFERENT FIREPLACE LOOKS!

close up of black, white and silver line klein holiday display on a fireplace mantel with silver miniature christmas trees and candles

I don't have a mantel. I have kind of a fireplace stove thing in my living room in my tiny little cottage in the Hollywood Hills.

Since I don't have a mantel, I really want one...a problem of mine...wanting things I don't have!

Anyhooo...when I saw these images of these two mantels below...made me wonder what direction I would take with decorating a mantel if I had one. Would I go modern like the clean white and black look of the this first mantel below...or would I go more traditional with greenery and more of classic holiday look like the dining room photo at the bottom?

Hmmm...thinking....

black, white and silver line klein holiday display with a fireplace, on the mantel there are silver miniature christmas trees and candles

michael graydon's rustic dining room with wicker host chair and green holiday garland over a large white fireplace

Which of these two mantels do you prefer? I think I'm leaning towards the more modern...love the little metal Christmas trees and the bit of silver sparkle...but I do like the warmth of the traditional mantel too.

Please weigh in!

Happy Wednesday!

THIS OR THAT: HOLIDAY CHEER!

Four COCOCOZY holiday cards two facing forwards and two facing backwards arranged in a rectangle
COCOCOZY 2012 Holiday Card! (above)

So our 2012 holiday cards came in yesterday for COCOCOZY. They are being sent out today.

We're going for a clean modern preppy holiday card look this year. All of our printed materials are designed by super duper fantastic freelance graphic designer EF. She does everything for us including the catalog, our postcards, stationery, order forms, letterhead...everything. EF is so talented and she is really cute too. I feel so lucky to have been working with her on the COCOCOZY graphic look for the last 2 years. She is awesome.

So our 2012 holiday card...Bold stripes on the back of the card and a simple white border on the front. The color scheme is a winter light blue, silver and white. A serif font and tah dah.

Last year we used the same wording "Joy" but the card looked a little different. Not that things can change now but wondering which COCOCOZY Holiday card you like best in today's THIS OR THAT!  The new 2012 card or the old 2011 card?

New - 2012 holiday card. (above)

COCOCOZY holiday card 2011
Old - 2011 holiday card (above)

two COCOCOZY holiday cards. One facing forwards the other facing backwards

So which of these two cards do you like better... the old or the new version.  It is too late to change the cards now but your opinion will definitely help us in deciding what we do for 2013. We'll certainly change the wording next year from "joy" to something else...I almost went with "believe" this year, but everyone except EF seemed to not like that! :-)

Want to hear your thoughts!

Happy Tuesday!

P.S.  Deciding on a holiday card can be tough.  Spent about two days on email with best of friend AM as she designed her family holiday card with pictures of her kids.  AM sent several versions to me and her hubby JE to approve.  Her cards turned out so cute...but there was one version where she had two side by side close up shots of her kids on the back of the card; her husband's comment on that version was "These look like mugshots".  Needless to say, AM quickly changed out those photos! LOL!

WEEKEND PHOTO!

Mercury glass Christmas tree in a kitchen window overlooking a backyard with a candle on each side

Well the holiday season is definitely in full swing. I trimmed my Christmas tree last weekend - a Douglas Fir...nice and plump...with white lights...silver, mirrored, sparkled and mercury glass ornaments...it shimmers at night. It is small but works.

Have a little obsession with mercury glass looking things lately...including this glass tree I picked up the other day.

This little holiday tree sits in my kitchen window or on my dining room table. I like its metallic shine. Oddly shaped kind of but still does the trick of adding a little touch of holiday spirit.

What holiday touches are you adding into your home? What do you think of this little glass tree...cute or weird looking? Hmmm...do tell!

Happy Saturday! Happy weekend!

HOLIDAY GIFT IDEA: LIMITED EDITION COCOCOZY LOGO LUCITE TRAYS!

COCOCOZY Logo Lucite Trays in Black and Gray
COCOCOZY Logo Lucite Trays - $85 (Clear lucite tray with COCOCOZY Logo removable insert. 11.5"x17.5"x2.5")
This holiday season, we at COCOCOZY bring you a new limited edition gift item in the COCOCOZY Shop...our very own COCOCOZY Logo Lucite Tray! Am obsessed with it.  I designed this simple sleek modern decorative tray by deciding to use our logo repeat pattern and CM and JW at the COCOCOZY HQ made it happen.  Oh did I mention it is 100% made in the U.S.A.!

Was talking to best of friend AM who had ordered a large fabulous over-sized lucite tray for about $500 from some chic online company.  AM had a custom insert made for her lucite tray from said chic company and it was sealed in the bottom of the tray.  AM emailed me the other day, totally bummed out...she said her tray from the chic company was ruined because water had seeped into the cracks at the bottom and ruined the tray.

So the cool thing about the COCOCOZY limited edition tray is that the  COCOCOZY Logo insert on the bottom is removable so that allows you to take the insert out and wash the tray and/or exchange the insert out for an image you like!

Oh...I must give credit where credit is due.  Good friend SN was the one who months ago said that I should do lucite home accessories.  SN is also the one who also gave me the name of the lucite workroom where we now manufacture!  Thank you SN!  She is so sweet and thoughtful!

Perhaps a gift for the holidays for someone you know.  Or even a home accessory to dress up your house for holiday entertaining.

We've only made a handful of these tray...as a special treat for the holidays.  Pre-order now and we'll ship out late next week...to arrive just in time for the holiday!

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

cut and peeled Granny Smith apples coated in cinnamon and sugar for a pie filling
Cut and peeled Granny Smith apples coated in cinnamon and sugar - pie filling in the works on Thanksgiving Day! (above)

It is Thanksgiving morning and I am running behind.  I was supposed to be in my car going to my mother's house for a big family dinner...but I am still baking my pies!  I am making 1 lumpy rustic apple pie and 1 sweet potato pie (a tradition from Grandmother). I'm running a few hours behind. At least I'll be there I hope before all of the extended family arrives. We're having our Thanksgiving with about 9-10 family members.

As I just finished one pie, I am taking a moment to reflect on how thankful I am for everyone in my life.

I am so thankful for my sweet family (mom, sis DS, aunts, uncles and cousins). Am also thankful for my dear dear friends (AM, FF, JH, NS, AT, JD, AG, ALG, A.Ro., JE, JLF, RRM, BN, SN to mention just a few of the many many good friends I am so lucky to have) and more (TE).  Then there is the gratitude I feel towards those who have become my extended COCOCOZY family (CM, KS, JF, HJ, HH, PR, JW, LH and more) - the people who have been so amazing in helping me with COCOCOZY this year at any given point.

And then of course there is you...you readers who check in on a regular basis...I am so so very thankful for you my dear COCOCOZY readers...you inspire me, you motivate me, and I am so thankful that you take the time to learn about design and decor with me on a day to day basis.

Anyhooo...here is how my lumpy rustic apple pie unfolded this morning!  Smells so delicious.  I love the warm sweet smells that permeate the house when I bake pies.  So wonderful.

4 photos arranged in a collage. The first is of two Granny Smith apples. The second is of three Granny Smith apples on a kitchen counter with a fourth being pierced by an apple peeler. The third photo is of sliced apples in a pie crust. The final photo is of a sealed pie

HAPPY THANKSGIVING EVE!

Japanese Maple leaves with the sun streaming through

I love Thanksgiving...such a wonderful time with family...enjoying good food...taking the time to reconnect.

I am making two pies (a sweet potato and an apple) for our family gathering at my mom's house. My hat goes off to those of you who are cooking an entire meal. My pies will take some time but nothing like a turkey and all of the sides!

Oh, the color of these leaves reminds me of fall. I took the photo a several months ago...actually back in the Spring...it is of the Japanese Maple in front of my house. Now there are barely any leaves on my little tree. I'm going to deck it with sparkle white lights for the holidays!

Anyhooo...what are you doing to prep for Thanksgiving tomorrow? Any fun plans tonight? How do you spend the night before a big holiday?

Hope you have a great Thanksgiving Eve.

Happy Wednesday.

UGLY OR PRETTY?: MY THANKSGIVING FALL FLORAL CENTERPIECE!

All photos in this post by Coco of COCOCOZY
Flower arrangement with dahlia, cockscomb, green coffee beans, seeded eucalyptus, baby hydrangeas and tea leaves on a table in a backyard

So a few weeks ago, I went down to the flower mart here in Los Angeles early on Saturday morning.  I don't know why I went all the way there...I was just looking to buy a white orchid for my living room.

But as I was driving to my florist, I was talking to my sis DS on the phone and she said "So you are going to the flower mart downtown?".  I said, "No".  She said, "You should go." I said, "I'm not going there, I don't even know where it is."  She said, "8th and Wall Street, I've got to go...bye."  There I was in gym clothes (not going to the gym I might add) in my car with the knowledge of where the flower mart was located and a little spare time on my hands...so I went.

Well there are good things about the flower mart and bad things....the good things are all of the gorgeous flowers...the bad thing is all of the gorgeous flowers.  I went looking for a white orchid and came home with flowers for a fall flower arrangement all of a sudden.

Anyhooo...needless to say...I pulled an assortment of flowers and greenery and brought it home...plopped it on my deck dining table and started cutting and snipping.  I got Dahlias, Cockscomb, Baby Hydrangea, Seeded Eucalyptus, Coffee Beans, Tea Leaves...I had only ever bought hydrangea, tea leaves and coffee beans for arrangements in the past...so this was all new to me.

I haven't posted the flower arrangement for weeks only because I kind of wasn't sure whether I thought it was pretty.  That day, while I was arranging, I had texted the images to a friend and he texted something back like "Wow. Wild flowers!" I think...he couldn't figure out a word to describe them I think!

So I didn't post these pictures a few weeks back...because I am kind of thinking my impromptu fall flower arrangement might be ugly?  Maybe?

Anyhooo...maybe this post will inspire you to arrange something pretty for your Thanksgiving table centerpiece.  In the meantime, I need your thoughts - is this do-it-yourself floral fall centerpiece UGLY OR PRETTY?

So, what do you all think?  UGLY OR PRETTY?  Please weigh in.  I love hearing your comments on these posts.  What would you have done differently?  What would you have kept the same?  Do tell.

Also, would love to know what you are planning for your Thanksgiving dinner table decor?  Anything you typically do that you'd like to share!

Happy Saturday!
